Edgar Flower of Middle Hill, Broadway generously paid for the village's first fire engine.
This is the letter which accompanied the cheque that he sent to the Broadway Parish Council chairman, in July 1897.

It reads:-

 Dear sir,
"I have pleasure in enclosing cheque for
£121-7-6 and shall be obliged if you will send it on, or pay the P.Council cheque to Messrs Merryweather for the fire engine"
